Symposium on 21st Century
Teaching Technologies

March 20 1998
Marshall Center
Today's symposium features faculty efforts in using technology to enhance teaching and learning and was planned to encourage broader understanding of the potential benefits and challenges of using technology in higher education. The symposium is co-sponsored by the Academic Computing Committee, the Center for Teaching Enhancement, Academic Computing, and Distance and Technology Mediated Learning/Educational Outreach.

The Academic Computing Committee was established by the Faculty Senate to provide a forum for faculty to inform Academic Computing about computing needs and for Academic Computing to disseminate information about changes in available resources to academic faculty and staff. Each academic division receives representation in proportion to the size of its faculty.

The Center for Teaching Enhancement was established to promote personal reflection and scholarly dialogue on the art, the science, and the craft of university teaching. The Center sponsors publications, workshops, and research that critically examine and promote instructional excellence and innovative teaching, including the use of instructional technology. The Center also offers opportunities for faculty or instructors to improve their teaching effectiveness using classroom visitations and/or mid-semester student feedback. Academic Computing is charged with offering computer support for instruction and research. This includes providing computer accounts, email and Internet access, assistance in network design, acquisition, installation, and troubleshooting for UNIX and NT networks and providing classes, both scheduled and on request, to students and faculty. Academic Computing also provides software consulting, Internet connectivity, World Wide Web access, and technical assistance to college and unit computing staff. The Academic Studio for Computer Education and Networked Developments (ASCEND) supports faculty involved in computer intensive classwork. Please stop by our table and talk with Shauna Schullo about our services. The Help Desk is located in LIB 608, at extension 4-1222. Classes are listed on their web page: http://www.acomp.usf.edu/.

Educational Outreach provides access to the University experience through credit and non-credit courses using a variety of delivery systems, formats, content and scheduling options. Support services for distance learning focus on four primary areas: faculty, students, courses and classrooms. Faculty support includes production and development assistance for web-based instruction, telecourses, videoconferencing, videotapes and interactive audio/video studio classroom instruction. Registration, invoicing, and materials distribution services are provided to remote learners and others enrolled in USF's distance learning and off-campus courses. Network services and coordination for USF's distance learning infrastructure support course delivery. Classrooms receive technology assistance through the delivery, set-up, and maintenance of audiovisual equipment, electronic media distribution and graphic design. Educational Outreach advances USF's teaching, research and service missions by supporting faculty, students, classrooms and courses both on- and off-campus. Please stop by the Educational Outreach table to learn more about our services. (813) 974-2996
