Research Library: RESERVE SERVICES
|
The Institute Library provides faculty a physical location to place
books, articles, and other media on reserve for use by students or
coleagues. Items may be placed on 3-hour, 24-hour, 3-day and 7-day
reserve. In addition, articles may be placed on electronic reserves by
semester, after ensuring that the items have complied with copyright.
Materials which do not require copyright permission
include the exams, syllabi, and lecture notes of the instructor placing
material on Reserves, portions of government publications not subject
to copyright restrictions, a single journal or magazine article used
for one semester, a single book chapter used for one semester, or
material for which the professor or instructor owns copyright.
Materials which require copyright permission are multiple chapters from
a single book or multiple articles from a single journal or magazine.
Complete books will not be scanned into electronic form.
Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code)
governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted
material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and
archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction.
One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction
is to be only used for private study, scholarship, or research
inappropriately, the user may be liable for copyright infringement. The
"fair use" provision in the Copyright Law has four measures:
- The purpose and character of the use, including
whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit
educational purposes;
- The nature of the copyrighted work;
- The amount and substantiality of the portion used in
relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
- The effect of the use upon the potential market for
or value of the copyrighted work.
The University of South Florida adheres to this statute through the
fair use provisions of the copyright law and permission of the
copyright holder where applicable.
