SEPTEMBER 1995

-- USF Virtual Library Planning Committee charged with formulating a virtual library development plan for presentation to the USF Library Directors.

OCTOBER 1995 - JANUARY 1996

-- Comprehensive literature search conducted to gain familiarity with issues relating to virtual or digital libraries.

DECEMBER 1995 - FEBRUARY 1996

Surveyed eight peer institutions to assess and compare the existing state of technology at the USF Libraries.

FEBRUARY 1996 - APRIL 1996

-- Attended national conferences and workshops to attain information on the latest developments in virtual library technology.

-- Conducted fourteen focus groups to assess user needs and expectations.

MAY 1996 - JUNE 1996

-- Wrote and edited the final planning document.

JULY 1996

-- Planning document presented to the USF Library Directors.

SEPTEMBER 1996

-- Planning document approved by the USF Library Directors.

OCTOBER 1996

-- Electronic Collections Team convened as an initial step in implementing the plan.

FEBRUARY 1997

-- Project Manager named to coordinate the implementation of the USF Virtual Library.

-- Virtual Library Implementation Team began working with Project Manager to continue development of the Virtual Library.

MARCH 1997

-- Virtual Library Implementation Team began making presentations about the virtual library to faculty and staff at each participating library.

-- USF Library Directors approved the creation of seven additional teams to continue with the development of the project.

-- Virtual Library Implementation Team made a budget request for external funding from the University administration for hardware, software and staffing needs related to the project.
