Research Library: ARCHIVE

The Institute Archive, begun in 1989 by Josephine King, a former director of the Library, is a distinct special collection that preserves the institutional history of the Institute, the publications and scholarship of its faculty and staff, and ephemeral items that have enduring historical value, including materials dealing with the history of mental health in Florida. Two sub-collections of interest are the papers of Edwin Arthur Larson, one of the principals in creating the Institute, and the papers of Colleen Bevis, a well-known advocate for children's mental health services in the state of Florida.

The Institute has two other collections of state-wide interest: The Child Welfare Commission Working Papers and the Governor's Commission on Infant Mortality. The Governor's Commission papers were accepted in 1998 from the Lawton and Rhea Chiles Center for Healthy Mothers and Babies.

In 1996, the Archive was catalogued on Pro-Cite by Jim Schnur, a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science, under the direction of Ardis Hanson. His catalogue is available online to be searched using the Library's search engine and for purchase through the Institute's Training Support Office. Jim catalogued over 1100 items prior to 1991 to the folder level. The catalogue was published as A guide to the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute archive (1996). Portions of the Archive were used to create the chronology of Institute and the history of the Library.
