The Florida Youth Suicide Prevention Study:
a Report to the Florida Legislature
K. Lazear, L. Nations, D. Vaughn, and K. Chambers, 1999.
The Youth Suicide Prevention Study is funded through the Department of Children and Families. The purpose of the study is to describe the current state of affairs in Florida's programs for children, youth and their families addressing suicide prevention and identify knowledgeable intervention strategies and promising practices that have been successful in reducing the risk factors associated with incidence of child and youth suicide. In addition, this study will identify specific skills and information to mental health practitioners, educators, families and other helping professions to assess suicide risk. The study will address sexual minority youth, those perceived as sexual minority youth, or those youth experiencing sexual identity crisis as they are an over-represented group of children and youth who are committing suicide.

The Florida Youth Suicide Prevention Study describes what professionals, parents, and youth are saying about suicide and their communities' attitudes, needs, and resources. The findings in this report provides information to better understand the problem of youth suicide, develop prevention and intervention efforts and inform families and professionals who might recognise warning signs and offer support and treatment.
