Aging, Alcohol, and Addictions

An informal interest group of the Gerontological Society of America

Hosted by the Department of Aging and Mental Health, Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute, University of South Florida

Welcome to the home page of the interest group on "Aging, Alcohol, and Addictions" of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA). This is the web site for this informal interest group (as categorized by the GSA) and provides important links to information and resources about older adults' use or misuse of alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription medications, and/or tobacco. This home page provides links to current members of the GSA interest group, as well as links to theirs and others' web sites related to this field, and helpful references on published research.

The group encourages communication among the many researchers, academicians, health care providers, clinicians, and others working in this field.  The interest group began in 1995, with the first meeting convened by Anne Gurnack, PhD, of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and Roland Atkinson, MD, of the Oregon Health Sciences University. During each annual meeting of the GSA, group members meet to exchange information and listen to the most recent updates on interventions and research.

On this website, you'll find information about our GSA Interest Group members' conference presentations, conference presentations of interest to our members, a bibliography/reference list of publications relevant to alcohol and addictions among older adults, web links and on-line training, such as the SAMHSA/CSAT Treatment Improvement Protocol #26 (Substance Abuse and Older Adults), CSAP's on-line tutorials, and recent books published on these topics.  Also, we will post announcements from group members aimed at policy, academic, and clinical issues.

Join the Group!  Our interest group provides web links or news on substance abuse and aging for GSA members. If you would like to add citations, website links, announcements about grants received or funding possibilities please email Dr. Larry Schonfeld (schonfeld@fmhi.usf.edu) and send us your reference lists, summaries of grant funding, brief descriptions of your current research, or other information concerning elders' use and misuse of alcohol and drugs for consideration of posting on this web site.

Join us at GSA for the 2008 Aging, Alcohol, and Addictions Interest Group Meeting

The 14th annual meeting of our Interest group takes place at the GSA Conference in National Harbor, Maryland in November 2008 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center.  Please check back at this website for the date and time of the meeting.
